The horse-drawn camp

As I walked down the track at dawn I was reminded of another time, a different era. Old trucks, caravans and vardos lined the fire lane and out of the morning mist bellowed smoke from the chimneys and fires that had been blazing through the night. The fires were surrounded by rings of people with big smiles on their faces who were chatting and dancing till the sun come up, an extra special moment for many after 2 years of bollox and bat flu. I see a lot of familiar faces over the weekend and I met some amazing people, people who have lived on the road for decades, some of the original convoy crew who stuck their fingers up to Thatchers Britain and done their own thing, they left the squats of the cities and took to the road carving out a whole new culture along the way. I love hearing the stories from the generations that came before us, many from that era are sadly no longer with us so I have all the time in the world to listen about what they have been through and the shenanigan'...

The Outer Regions cafe - 20yrs in the fields - Part 1 the early years 2005 - 2010 .

In 2005 I sold my flat and moved outta London to follow my dream of starting a travelling chai tent with my partner at the time Lowenna and our soon to be born son, Milo. Ever since travelling around India in the early 90's I had that dream and although sometimes it can be a wee stressfull and challenging I have never, ever looked back. I started building the cafe from old bits of scrap wood and the carpets we got out of skips, amazingly some of those carpets have lasted to this day. The frame was an old gala tent frame I tatted from Glasto and I modified it with bamboo from the Bristol scrap store. We had tatted blue tarps and an old parachute at first but when we went to India for winter we commissed some handmade bespoke green canvas tarps. To this day we still use recycled, upcycled and repurposed stuff in the cafe its important to us to stick to that ethos. Glastonbury - the calm after the beautiful storm

Monday is my favourite day at Glasto, the day starts with excitement as its tat day, the day we go out to collect things we need, new tents, chairs, string, power banks, all the stuff people couldn't be bothered to haul all the way to the public car parks. Then there's the stuff that people have lost, money, ganja, tobacco the list goes on, it really is a goldmine for those that know where to look. Unfortunately I woke up a bit late this year so the youth beat us to the booze, they were out first thing in the morning collecting up some of the thousands of full beer cans that are scattered all around the public campsites, they then take them up to the stone circle and sell them to the last of the party revellers. Gonna go far those youth. Olivia from Boliva wanted to tat only one thing, one of those posh portable toilets like the van lifers have, she was out for many hrs and found many things but didn't find her toilet so you can imagine her excitement when Ellie found on...
